Birthday Party Coordinator

Job Description:

The Birthday Party Coordinator will support the museum’s public programming initiatives by organizing and facilitating children’s birthday parties. Birthday parties occur on Saturdays and Sundays. Applicants must have weekend availability, as well as at least one week day availability for party preparation.

The Birthday Party Coordinator may also have opportunities to help with guest experience enhancement and educational activity facilitation in the Innovation Gallery and Studios through engagement around exhibits, hands-on activities, live science and technology demonstrations, and public festivals when not involved with birthday parties.

Basic Functions and Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Professionally represent the museum and its mission to guests as they celebrate a special occasion
  • Create a fun, educational, safe and unforgettable environment for parents, the birthday boy or girl and their guests
  • Interfacing with other museum departments to schedule and plan for parties
  • Communicating with birthday party families prior to their party day
  • Monitoring party supply levels and prepping supplies prior to party days
  • Organize the physical party space:  Setting up the birthday party studio before party guests arrive, resetting the party studio between parties and studio clean-up after the last event for the day
  • Meet and greet party hosts and share all needed materials/instructions  and assist in guest check in 
  • Manage party schedule, ensuring that parties begin and end on time
  • Lead educational demonstrations and activities for guests
  • Attend to guest’s needs during the party
  • Assisting in coordinating other trained staff to help with birthday parties
  • Other duties as needed

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Previous experience in the service industry (birthday party and/or special events) preferred
  • Educational and/or theatrical/public speaking experience strongly preferred
  • Background/interest in education, science, history, theatre or related field strongly preferred
  • Comfortable learning a wide variety of content both in the work space and independently, including but not limited to: science, history, technology, engineering, art, and design
  • Confident interacting with diverse groups of all sizes, including varying ages, backgrounds, knowledge levels, learning styles, and special needs
  • Ability to positively meet challenges in an ever changing environment with creativity and flexibility
  • Can work independently to identify jobs that needs to be done and follow through with little direction, while being able to adapt to working cooperatively with other team members
  • Fluency in multiple languages a plus (Spanish preferred)
  • Proven ability to respond and make good decisions under pressure
  • Ability to be active for extended periods of time, as well as frequent bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Candidates must also possess the ability to lift up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays. Hours may vary by the needs of the museum and seasonally
