Full-Time Employment

Job Summary: 

The Museum’s Planetarium Educator is responsible for educational presentations to school groups, college classes, special event clientele and our  general public.  Presentations include operation of our  Zeiss ZKP4 Starball and Quinto Spacegate hybrid system. Onsite system training is available  but planetarium operations experience is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for learning and informing others, must be comfortable with public speaking and have knowledge of astronomy and/or general science. 

Basic Functions and Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • operate complex computer systems

  • operate office software to schedule staff and generate show schedules

  • program Powerdome Show Manager, ZKP4, and Uniview

  • run system updates for Powerdome, ZKP4, Uniview, and additional computers

  • manage large crowds in pre-show exhibit space

  • communicate effectively with all guests in a pleasant and confident speaking voice

  • generate ideas to promote planetarium in the community

  • research new show material, provide notes, and/or train applicable presenting staff

  • monitor daily space news and read scholarly articles regarding new science discoveries

  • disseminate new scientific information about event and discoveries to staff, audience, media

  • develop hands-on activities for demonstrations in exhibit area

  • knowledge of national and state standards in astronomy and other sciences

  • availability to educators  for questions regarding astronomy and other sciences

  • serve on designated committees within the museum

Qualifications:

  •     bachelor degree in science or applicable field and/or qualifying experience

  •     public school teaching experience preferred

  •     knowledge of astronomy

  •     valid driver’s license

  •     ability to lift 50 pounds

  •     ability to sit or stand for long periods of time

  •     flexibility of work time hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays

  •     dependability

  •     good people skills

  •     public speaking experience

  •     broad computer skills

  •     ability to multi-task

  •     organized

  •     detail-Oriented

  •     effective problem solving skills
